Know Your Case Scheme :

A unique scheme under the title “Know your Case” scheme has been launched in all the police stations of Chandigarh from June 1, 2013.

The idea behind this scheme is to bring greater transparency and accountability in police functioning. The complainant of a criminal case or a complaint has the right to know the status of investigations/inquiries of the case/petition.

For this purpose, 2nd Saturday of every month has been fixed as the “Know Your Case” day.

On that day the SHO alongwith all the I/Os and I/C Beats will remain present in the police station from 10 am to 2 pm. During this perid, complainant and petitioners would be at the liberty to discuss the case/petition with the I/O and be apprised of the status of the same.

The SHO shall personally remain present and supervise these proceedings. The SDPO of each Sub Division will also personally review this process by spending equal time in each police station of his Sub Division on this day.

He will also interact with the complainants and petitioners to ensure the efficiency of this scheme. A booklet titled “Know Your Case” containing features of this scheme and statical data has been published.

Mobile Police Stations Scheme :
Chandigarh Police is committed to providing quality policing services to the citizens. As part of this commitment, Chandigarh Police has launched a unique scheme called Mobile Police Stations Scheme.

Under this scheme, two mobile police stations are sent to those areas where the bulk of the population is poor and under privileged. The objective of this scheme is to ensure that the under privileged part of the society gets proper access to police assistance at their door step itself.

About Us :
On 1st November, 1966, the newly formed Indian State of Haryana was carved out of the Eastern portion of Punjab. The city of Chandigarh was selected to be the joint capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana and declared as a Union Territory.

Chandigarh is one of the best planned cities on India. It as unique place in the world in terms of architecture and town planning. The city is located in picturesque setting at the foot of Shivalik hills.

Chandigarh Police was reorganized on 1st November, 1966. The first chief of Chandigarh Police was Shri V. K. Kalia, SSP. The post of IGP was created in 1981 and 16 IGPs have been appoint till date. Presently Shri R. P. Upadhyaya, IPS, is the Inspector General of Police.

FAQs :
1. Are any kind of fee or charges to be paid to police for registration of FIR ? OR Is the complainant entitled to a free copy of the FIR ?
Absolutely not. Police is not to be paid any fee or money for registering the FIR and subsequent investigation. If anybody in the police station makes such a demand, a complaint should immediately be made to the senior police officer as mentioned above. OR

Yes, definitely. As per Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.PC) it is mandatory on the part of police to provide a copy of the FIR, free of cost to the complainant.

2. Are any kind of fee or charges to be paid for getting the injured medically examined or for putting up challan in the court ?
No, the entire investigation of the case, including the medical examination of the injured and submitting challan in the court, is part of Government duty for which no charges are levied by the govt.

If any demand for money is made at any stage of investigation, a complaint should immediately be made to the senior police officers.

3. What is a Bailable offence ?
In bailable offences, the accused can claim bail as a matter of right. Police is supposed to release such an accused on bail if he is prepared to give bail at any time while he is in the custody of a Police Officer

4. What is a Non-Bailable offence ?
In non-bailable offences, the accused is not entitled to bail as a matter of right. Police invariably does not take bail in such cases and only the Court grants bail. The list of bailable and non-bailable offences is given in the first schedule of the Cr.P.C.
