Permit
It is essential to obtain permits from the Transport Department, if anyone decides to ply a transport vehicle. [carrying passengers or goods or both by road for hire or reward]. State Transport Authority regulates the issue of permits.

Buses, Trucks, Vans, Tourist, taxis, auto rickshaws, Private Service Vehicles , tractor, jeeps will all need permits.
The validity of the regular permits will be 5 years from the date of its issue, except Temporary and Special Permits. Each permits shall have a separate form and fees as prescribed.
Note:
For SC applicants 25% concession on the fee is allowed.
Temporary Permit:
The temporary permits enable a goods carriage to ply in a State other than its home State. Thus a vehicle registered in Pondicherry and permit issued in Pondicherry desiring to enter other state may obtain a temporary permit in Pondicherry, to ply in other state for a maximum period of 30 days. The fees to be paid in Rs.100/- and tax has to be paid. The temporary permit can be obtained at the department. Similarly vehicle coming from other states can get Temporary permit at chekpost at Gorimedu, Puducherry service is allowed at once.

Renewal of Permit:
A permit other than temporary permit or special permit issued for a period of five years may be renewed on an application made not less than 15 days before the date of its expiry.
1. Form P.R.A.
2. Fees 50% of the fees prescribed for grant of permit.
3. Vehicle Registration Certificate (R.C.)
4. Valide Insurance Certificate.
5. Permit Part – A or Part –B.
6. Financier NOC if any.
7. No disciplinary is pending case at the time of considering the application.
Replacement of Vehicle in Permit:
The holder of a permit, may with the permission of the authority which granted the permit replace vehicle covered by the permit by any other vehicle of the same nature.
1. Applicant shall apply in Form P.Rep.A.
2. Fees Rs.500/- variation in seating capacity or laden weight if any the the fees will be Rs.1000/-
3. Vehicle Registration Certificate (R.C.)
4. Valide Insurance Certificate.
5. Permit Part – A or Part –B.
Transfer of Permit:
A permit shall not be transferable from one person to another except with the permission of the Transport Authority which granted the permit and shall not, without such permission, operate to confer on any person to whom a vehicle covered by the permit is transferred any right in the manner authorised by the permit.
1. Applicant shall apply in Joint application.
2. Fees: The same fees prescribed for grant of permit.
3. The transferee must be a resident of Pondicherry.
4. Solvency Certificate (Stage Carriage only) of Rs. 3,00,000.; in case of S.C. candidate Rs. 1, 00,000 should be produced..
5. Income – tax Clearance Certificate.
6. Parking Place Agreement.
7. Workshop Agreement.
Surrender of Permit:
The holder of permit may, at any time surrender the permit to the State Transport Authority by which it was granted and the State Transport Authority shall forthwith cancel any permit so surrendered.
