Registration Of OCI Overseas Citizen of India

A foreign national, who was eligible to become citizen of India on 26 th January 1950 or belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15 th August 1947 and his/her children and grand children are eligible for registration as OCI.

However, if the applicant had ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, he/she will not be eligible for OCI. A person who may have been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, and is married to a person eligible for registration as OCI is not eligible for grant of OCI. However, their children are eligible as OCI. An OCI Registration Card will be issued by the Indian Missions/Posts abroad after scrutinizing the application and deciding eligibility.

Steps for successful Registration
** Read Instruction carefully before starting the registration process.
** Make a list of family members who are willing to apply for OCI.
** Start registration from Part-A, and keep registering Part-A for all the family members in one go.
** Part-B Registration, which is a group registration, will require information of the family members who are applying for OCI-Card.
** Documents to be enclosed alongwith application are given at the end of Part-B.
** Completed application is to be submitted to the appropriate office.

Important Notice To Oci Card Holders :
OCI card holders traveling to India are advised to carry the Passport containing U Visa sticker and OCI Card to avoid problems at Immigration check points in India. In case registered OCI has obtained a new passport, kindly ensure to carry the passport containing U Visa sticker, new passport and OCI document during all visits to India.
ALTERNATIVELY, Miscellaneous Services can be availed for transfer of U Visa sticker to new passport. However, before applying for Misc Services kindly read the instructions posted under OCI Misc Service particularly the processing period. Since applications are processed in the order of their receipt in the Consulate, this service cannot be expedited.New OCI Registration can be done online.

About OCI :
A foreign national,
(i) who was a citizen of India at the time of, or at any time after 26th January, 1950; or
(ii) who was eligible to become a citizen of India on 26th January, 1950; or
(iii) who belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15th August, 1947; or
(iv) who is a child or a grandchild or a great grandchild of such a citizen;
