Central Herd Registration Scheme :

Objectives : The scheme aims to, in case of cattle and buffalo, fulfill the following objectives:

** Identification and location of superior germ plasm.
** Using this data for producing superior germ plasm.
** Preservation of indigenous germ plasm.
** Milk recording of cattle and buffaloes as the first step for improving dairy cattle milk production.

Implementing Agencies:

** CHRS Unit Ongole in Andhra Pradesh

Target Group/Beneficiaries:
The primary aim is to identify elite germ plasm for further improvement in milk production.

Indigenous breeds covered at present are Gir, Kankrej, Hariana, Ongole of cattle and Murrah, Jaffrabadi, Surti and Mehsani of buffaloes. Under the scheme incentives for rearing of elite cows, buffaloes and their male calves is given to the owners of the elite animals.

Funding pattern: 100% Central Grant.

Cattle and Dairy Development :
India ranks first among the world’s milk producing Nations since 1998 and has the largest bovine population in the World.

Milk production in India during the period 1950-51 to 2014-15, has increased from 17 million tonnes to 146.3 million tonnes as compared to 137.7 million tonnes during 2013-14 recording a growth of 6.26 % FAO reported 3.1% increase in world milk Production from 765 million tonnes in 2013 to 789 million tonnes in 2014.

The per capita availability of milk in the country which was 130 gram per day during 1950-51 has increased to 322 gram per day in 2014-15 as against the world average of 293.7 grams per day during 2013.

About Us :
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (AH&D) – now renamed as Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying & Fisheries (DADF) is one of the Departments in the Ministry of Agriculture and came into existence w.e.f. 1st February, 1991, by converting two divisions of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation namely Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development into a separate Department.

The Fisheries Division of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation and a part of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries were later transferred to this Department w.e.f. 10th October, 1997.
