How To Get Licence To Work Lift/Escalator in Tamil Nadu?
1. As per the section 5 of the Tamil Nadu Lifts Act, 1997 and Rule 5 of the Tamil Nadu Lifts Rules, 1997 Every owner of a place who is permitted to erect a Lift or an Escalator shall, on completion of such erection of Lift or Escalator, shall give a notice to the Inspector and shall make an application in the portal to him for a licence. The notice of completion of the erection of Lift or Escalator and the application for licence shall be in Form “C” along with the following enclosures

(a) a work completion report of the erection of Lift or Escalator in Form “D” as obtained either from the manufacturer of Lifts or Escalators or a Company of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, as the case may be;
(b) a completion report in Form “E” from the licensed electrical contractor;
(c) A fee of:
(i) Rs.5,000/-(Rupees Five Thousand only) in case of lift up to 5 landings;
(ii) Rs.10,000/-(Rupees Ten Thousand only) in case of lift having more than 5 landings;
(iii) Rs.10,000/- (Rupees Ten Thousand only) for each Escalator.
The above fee shall be paid in to a Govt. treasury under this dept. head of account 0043 00 800 AB 21634 through the url: https://www.karuvoolam.tn.gov.in/challan/echallan
(d) Copy of insurance policy taken by the owner of the Lift or Escalator, covering insurance for the persons using such lift or escalator
2. On receipt of an application the Inspector shall arrange for inspection of the Lift or Escalator within fifteen days and on getting himself satisfi ed that all the requirements of the Act and these rules are complied with, he may grant licence in Form “F” within fifteen days from the date of receipt of compliance report of rectifi cation of defects, if any.

Timeline For Issuing Erection Permission
Time lime for issuing erection permission – 30 days

TNEI Lift Erection:
The Owner of the Place where the Lift is to be erected shall
1. Ensure the Lift Erection Company is approved by Chief Electrical Inspector to Govt., Chennai -32
2. Duly fill in Form ‘A’ in consultation with the Lift Company
3. Enclose triplicate copies of drawings duly signed by the Applicant and Authorized Person of Lift Company, showing
** Layout of the lift erection
** Plan
** Section Elevation
** Arrangement of Doors
** Lift well Enclosure
** Size and position of the machine relating to the lift well
** Position of hoisting machine
** Number of floors to be served and total travel
4. Enclose triplicate copies of drawings duly signed by the Applicant and licenced Electrical Contractor, showing Wiring Scheme for the complete lift installation including earthing scheme
5. Enclose copy of approval obtained from the Urban Local Body concerned for the Building Plan
