Disclaimer:
The process for approval, renewal of permission and recognition of medical colleges is transparent, based on declared parameters. All concerned at the Medical Council of India (MCI) are duty bound to process all such cases in a transparent, fair and consistent manner. No individual/organization can therefore influence the process in any manner.
Further, it is therefore reiterated that if any individual approaches the college authority for soliciting any favours on behalf any officer of the MCI including any member of the Board of governors, should be reported to the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of the MCI. Any interaction by the college authorities with any such person would be at their own individual level.
About Us :
The Medical Council of India was established in 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933, now repealed, with the main function of establishing uniform standards of higher qualifications in medicine and recognition of medical qualifications in India and abroad.
The number of medical colleges had increased steadily during the years after Independence. It was felt that the provisions of Indian Medical Council Act were not adequate to meet with the challenges posed by the very fast development and the progress of medical education in the country.

Functions of MCI
The Medical Council of India (MCI) was a statutory body for establishing uniform and high standards of medical education in India until its dissolution on 25 September 2020 when it was replaced by National Medical Commission. The Council granted recognition of medical qualifications, gave accreditation to medical schools, granted registration to medical practitioners, and monitored medical practice in India. The MCI faced persistent criticism for corruption.
The functions of the MCI were as follows:
** Establish and maintain uniform standards for undergraduate medical education: The MCI was responsible for establishing and maintaining uniform standards for undergraduate medical education in India. This included setting the curriculum, conducting examinations, and accrediting medical colleges.
** Regulate postgraduate medical education: The MCI was responsible for regulating postgraduate medical education in India. This included setting the curriculum, conducting examinations, and accrediting postgraduate medical institutions.
** Recognize medical qualifications: The MCI was responsible for recognizing medical qualifications granted by universities and medical colleges in India. This included verifying the authenticity of the qualifications and ensuring that they meet the required standards.
** Accredit medical schools: The MCI was responsible for accrediting medical schools in India. This included inspecting the schools and ensuring that they meet the required standards of infrastructure, faculty, and curriculum.
** Register medical practitioners: The MCI was responsible for registering medical practitioners in India. This included verifying the qualifications of the practitioners and ensuring that they are fit to practice medicine.
