Gender Indira kranthi Patham

Gender is one of the components included in the programme, Indira Kranthi Patham. Gender strategy helps SHG women to monitor their social empowerment agenda along with financial agenda, increase their capacities in decision making at different levels, free mobility, having a say in local governance and building a safe environment.

Women in groups ensure that basic rights of all SHG women are not violated and that they create support systems like Social Action Committees in every village and Community Managed Family Counseling Centres at every mandal, to help themselves.

Activities
Social Action Committees formation
11832 Village level Social Action Committees, 516 Mandal level Social Action Committees and 4 District level Social Action Committees formed to deal with the cases related gender discrimination, to act as watchdog committees to monitor MDG goals. 85546 SHG members who received gender training and selected to work on protection of women’s rights as members in these committees.

Training to SACs
The series of capacity building programmes provided to Mandal level SACs included gender training, awareness on women laws, counselling skills, negotiation & conflict resolution skills, exposure to systems and visits to the NGOs implementing similar programmes. With this intensive trainings, Social Action Committees became very active

Resolution of cases
Mandal level SACs have received a total No of 17602 cases related to gender based violence, and 12488 were resolved by them, some of them were through court and police. Mandal SACs receive cases on fixed week days at Community Managed FCCs and visit victim. Help line is established at district level to receive cases on daily basis. After receiving a call, victim is advised what she has to do immediately to protect herself and the case will be informed by phone to the nearest MSAC member for immediate follow-up.

Stop child Marriages
More than 5000 child marriages were stopped over a period of 4 years. During the marriage seasons SACs conduct campaigns, identify the families who are going to conduct these marriages with the help of VO SACs, School Children and Anganwadi workers. Gender CRPs counsel the parents and children who are going to be married. Arrange a daily or weekly “Tamaku” in the village with the help of Sarpanch, inform all the villagers that child marriages are illegal, and what law says.

Stop selling, killing & abandonment of girls
Women and Child Welfare Department in AP started Cradle system in hospitals to protect the girls from infanticide and selling of babies. But this is creating more problems in practice, many of them leaving their children and the option is equally bad, abandoning of girls in cradle. After leaving in the cradle also no body is looking at them immediately, the child is suffering without food, water etc, deaths are also occurring in such situations.
