FAQ On Indian Railways

1. How many days in advance can I reserve my ticket?
You can reserve your ticket 60 days in advance, excluding the date of journey at the train originating station. At intermediate stations where the train arrives the following day, reservation can be done 61 days in advance. In the case of some intercity day express trains, the advance reservation period is less.

2. How do I know the reservation status of my ticket?
The reservation status will be clearly indicated in your ticket. If your ticket is confirmed, your coach and berth numbers will be mentioned on your ticket in all classes other than First Class and AC First Class.

For these, the word “Confirmed”, will be printed alongside the class of travel. If your ticket is in RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) / Waitlisted status, the same will be mentioned on the ticket.

Note : Passengers are requested to kindly note that while every effort will be made to ensure a comfortable, hassle-free journey, Indian Railways are not liable to compensate a passenger due to non-provision of reserved accommodation or for any losses suffered due to late running of trains and other such unintended eventualities which are not wilful or deliberately perpetrated.

3. Can I board the train with an RAC?
You can board the train with an RAC ticket. You will be provided with sitting accommodation initially and allotted a berth (in case of passengers not turning up) in the train.

Some Important Information From Comments

Comments:
1. I booked tickets online on 02/03/2018 for travelling to NJP from Sealdah Station (E.R) on 18/04/2018 against PNR 6611991677. I am a seventy years old senior citizen and my wife is 61 years old and a cardiac patient. Both, we have been allotted upper berths in train Number 12377. I fervently request the Concerned Railway Authorities to kindly examine my plea and arrange for allotting LOWER BERTHS to us considering our old age.

2. When the railways do not permit ‘gender’ change which has occurred erroneously at the time of eticket booking, why there is a provision for change in the name of passenger and change in the Boarding station at a later stage after booking e.ticket. Therefore, I suggest that the above provision should be deleted from the railway rules else the passenger (Mrs. Ambika Rajan) for whom ticket booked under PNR number 8638915510 may be allowed to travel with the same ticket as it was a genuine error that in the gender column the ‘gender’ was mentioned as ‘male’. Railways could not provide me a logical reply to the complaint made by me under reference number W/WR/RJT/000087986.

  4. Sir,
Generally in sleeper class , bogie is full with unreserved passengers & they sit
here & there & also sit in the passage & especially in the night these unreserved passengers sleep on the floor of bogie & reserved passengers are unable to move for there naturals calls & not comfortable to those reserved peoples who reached. there stations or those who wants to travel by this train Now a days it is happening frequently because TTE & other checking staff take the penalty & issue a receipt to these unreserved passenger’s & railway earned the money & leave the reserved passengers on there condition .
Such types of practice should be stop by the railway because it is clearly the violation of services which are provided to Reserved passengers.
