India’s Climate Resilient Coastal Villages

The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) has approved the development of 100 Climate-Resilient Coastal Fishing Villages under the Annual Action Plan 2024-25, with a total outlay of Rs. 200 crore. This initiative aims to enhance the economic resilience of coastal communities impacted by climate change

The initiative, part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), allocates Rs. 2 crore per village to develop essential fisheries infrastructure. This includes modernizing drying yards, processing centers, fish markets, and establishing emergency rescue services. Additionally, the project promotes climate-resilient practices such as seaweed cultivation, artificial reefs, and green fuel projects.

Fisheries Cluster at a Glance

The Department of Fisheries has envisaged a strategic focus on cluster development across key areas, including Pearl, Seaweed, Ornamental Fisheries, Reservoir Fisheries, Fishing Harbours, Saline Water Aquaculture, Cold Water Fisheries, Sea Cage Culture, Freshwater and Brackish-Water Fisheries, Deep Sea and Oceanic Fisheries, Organic Fisheries, Wetland Fisheries, Island Fisheries and other areas tailored to specific sectoral and regional needs.

To advance this vision, the Department of Fisheries has already identified locations for three priority areas for development as such as Hazaribagh District in Jharkhand for pearl culture, Madurai District in Tamil for ornamental fisheries and UT of Lakshadweep for seaweed. Furthermore, the department has also notified Tuna Cluster in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

In line with above, the Department of Fisheries, MoFAH&D, GoI, has designated Soreng District in Sikkim as an Organic Cluster for development of fisheries and aquaculture in the State of Sikkim, marking a significant step in the development of the state’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Government of Sikkim has already embraced organic farming, which has helped build a strong reputation for sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural practices. Introducing organic aquaculture will align with the state’s broader vision of promoting organic, sustainable, and environmentally friendly practices across all sectors.

Designated NBCs Under PMMSY

The Department of Fisheries in India has designated specific Nucleus Breeding Centres (NBCs) to enhance the genetic quality of aquaculture species. These NBCs play a crucial role in improving the productivity and quality of species like shrimp, which are vital for both domestic consumption and export.

For freshwater species, the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has been designated as the Nodal Institute. For marine species, the Regional Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) in Mandapam, Tamil Nadu, serves as the Nodal Institute.
